Chapter 16

Jamie

Jamie opened her mouth to saying something to Cory but snapped her jaw closed with a clack of her teeth when Travis wandered over to their table, his hands hidden in the pockets of his black leather jacket.

“Hey, dorks,” Travis said, flopping into the empty chair between them without invitation.

“Can we help you?” Cory asked.

“You kids seem to be having a good time.” He smirked briefly before shifting to what he thought was an intimidating face.

Normally Jamie might have found it intimidating, but now that she’d seen the masters for whom Travis ran errands, she was less impressed.

“What do you want, Travis?” Jamie pursed her lips.

“You were given a task. My associates want to know why you haven’t accomplished it yet.”

Travis’s arrogance rankled her. With out that leather jacket with the Thor’s hammer over the left side of the chest, Travis would just be any other loser twerp barely making it through high school.

“We weren’t given a time line. We’ll get it done when the time is right. This isn’t like getting a gallon of milk for your mom.”

“My aren’t you getting brave. Not the meek little nobody you used to be.” He snickered. “Be careful you don’t mouth off to the wrong person, Jamie.”

“Tell them we’re working on it. This isn’t an easy task.”

Cory nodded. “Right. We’ll get it done. We’ll actually follow through.”

He’d tried to sound confident, but Jamie, who knew him better than anyone else, heard the trepidation and barest hint of a quaver he tried to cover up.

“Tell Ivar we’ve been preparing. We want to do this job correctly and not blow it. He can have the job done quickly and wrong or he can have it done properly. He can’t have both quickly and correctly all at once.”

At the mention of Ivar, Travis flinched slightly and paled nearly imperceptibly. If Jamie hadn’t been paying attention, she’d have missed it.

Rallying himself, he puffed up. “I’ll tell them. You just better hope they accept your answer.”

She inhaled and prepared to say something obnoxious, but bit her lip and exhaled. “Thanks, Travis. We’re trying to do our best. I appreciate you taking the time to carry our message to Ivar.”

He nodded and stood up. “We’ll be in touch.” Then, he walked away.

Cory twisted around to make sure Travis was gone and not lurking around one of the bookshelves. When he was sure the bikers’ flunky was gone, he chuckled weakly. “You handled him.”

“Yeah,” she replied, then added half-heartedly, “I really handled him.”
